Designing for the second visit

The first visit earns attention. The second visit reveals whether a product has become understandable.

First visits are unusually forgiving. Everything is new, and novelty fills gaps in understanding. The second visit is different: the person arrives with a half-formed memory of how the thing works.

Good product design meets that memory halfway.

Navigation stays where it was. Labels use the same verbs. Recent work is easy to find. The interface provides recognition before it demands recall.

The second visit is where a product begins to feel like a place.
